It's not only an interesting thing to know, but it's also directly related to the fact that a large amount of grown adults can't use "naughty" words.
I'm sure there's a few people out there that saw me bitching about the chat censorship in global chat. I have good reasons to complain about this removal of potentially "harmful" words, I'm personally against almost any form of censorship, and when it comes to simple words, it becomes somewhat frustrating. Let me just state a few things that make this decision a bad one.
1. Chat censor is poorly constructed and censors word(s) that shouldn't be censored.
2. Likely ~95% of the people who play here are grown ass adults. We have almost all played this game at some point 10+ years ago, doing the math there isn't too difficult.
3. A player can easily bypass whatever words end up being changed/added, it's been done since very early RSC. Bottom line, it doesn't actually do anything to improve the server, it's only a detriment to it IMO.
Would love to hear opinions on this, please let me know what you think about this change.
4. MOST IMPORTANTLY - Is it completely necessary to force all players to have censorship in global chat? I can't think of any possible negative outcome that would happen from allowing players to be given an option as to whether they would like their chat censored or not.

I've never understood all this bullshit, bunch of ''grown adults'' telling people their age what to say and what to not say is just ******** just like the people who thinks so, feeling so imporant and powerful by being able to mute or ban the people with a bad mouth ! ha,if someone has problems you can always add the people you dont like listening to on your ignore list, talking **** to eachother has always been part of the game, especially when it comes to the pking scene, just have different global channels for Pking ( the garbage talk ) and a Regular one, ignore the rest.
Wasn't really pointed at your question, but yeah. Same with the chat censorships on certain words, i don't feel like thats a necessary thing to have, you dont want people to advertise other servers thats allright but as example 99,5% already know what other servers there are, and you can always write what you wanna say in some form, then you see a mod coming up saying like Hey! You can't talk about that ! .. get real :X

Great post! I like the dedication and commitment you have towards the server. Unfortunately censorship isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, however I would agree that some of the words added to the censorship list may be too much. Most of us are adults, and unfortunately many players still continue to use racial/deogetory words to others in the community which simply isn’t called for. The intent of this wasn’t to impact “pk banter” but to put a stop to some of the more serious and offensive things being said to our community memebers. Unfortunately a memeber of the staff isn’t able to police the chat 100% of the time, but what we can do is censor some of the more serious words.
We will review the current list of words being censored and make any changes that we feel are appropriate.
in real life, if im around kids i'll always try to watch my language but since we're online and around other adults, i see absolutely no reason for it.
whoever came up with cencored words, well FU*K you.

One again thanks for your great post
I appreciate your post and taking the time to read mine, and while I fully acknowledge and agree to a certain extent why and what you guys are trying to do, you didn't address the part that I made quite large that said "most importantly" - I still can't see why we can't simply have an OPTION to turn chat filter ON or OFF. The client could be set up such that it is turned on by default, and the player would have to very intentionally turn it off.
It would be a very simple solution for any and all players who would prefer to avoid hearing such things being said over global chat, not to mention there is already an effective system in place to block certain toxic players (regular players know who they are).
(also, I would suggest taking a look at the current results of the poll, even though its certainly nowhere near a representation of the entire community)

Brilliant idea, as chat-censorship can be indeed coded via client-side. (I know from experience in owning a rsc-server years ago, back in rscd v1 release days). +1 to adding censorship on/off functionality.

I will bring it up with the admins on this idea for which i like.

The functionality of turning global on and off is something that will be released in a future patch “sooner then later”. This will aid in being able to manage some toxicity from a player level, however there is a much bigger problem with some of our players being down right dissrespecful/racist to other players and staff.

I'm not sure I understand this type of censorship? We can't say fuck shit or bitch yet they allow us to say things like bumhole and newfag? Best solution: get rid of the stars.
Thank you mods and everyone else for responding and taking the time to read my post, I'm not overly eager to swear on global or anything, it's just the principle of the matter.
We are in the process of adding some new filters to our game client, which will give the end user the option to toggle censored words, and specific chat "channels" on/off. This should eliminate most complaints we have with our current chat system and the excessive profanity that may be offending some users.
