I have a lot of nostalgia around Runescape Classic, and I would be very interested to learn more about how the RSCEmulation community developed, its history, and the origin of the code and assets used today. I am the author of Open-RSC, which is based heavily on other community attempts to recreate Runescape Classic, in particular eXemplar's client, but I still have a lot of questions.
So - would any devs / mods here be interested in an interview?
Interesting, I always thought https://github.com/Open-RSC/Game is the one for Open-RSC (couldn't find your name on contributor list though), or is it an entirely different version of Open-RSC that you're doing? Would love to know! 🙂

Danjb is the "real deal" so to speak. I spoke with him numerous times over the years, as far back as 2006 if I remember correctly. He has good intentions unlike Kenix and Marwolf.

Interesting, I've not come across this project before. They are completely different, although mine was created in January 2017 and theirs was created in July 2018. From what I can tell, theirs is based on RSCEmulation source, whereas mine is based on EasyRSC. Theirs is also much more advanced, because my project attempts to rewrite a lot of the original Runescape client code so that it can be understood.
As for my intentions, I am merely a humble developer chasing nostalgia 🙂
I played Runescape from 2001 to about 2007.
I had vague plans to continue my open-source remake and perhaps modernise it a little, convert it to OpenGL, maybe even port it to JavaScript, but all of this seems a little redundant now in light of everything that has been done already!
Danjb, specifically, what questions do you have regarding RSCemulation? I would recommend joining the official discord server, that would get you in touch easier with some good people that would have fantastic answers. I'd talk to Wavy, Sil, or Bl0dz. They are all really great and im sure could be of help to you.
I haven't fully prepared my questions yet, but here are some that come to mind:
- I have heard "jag" and "mem" files referred to as "cache files". Where did these come from, and which versions correspond to which mudclient versions? - Are the different client-server protocols documented anywhere? The link that I had (https://rswiki.moparisthebest.com) is dead. - What are the differences between the different mudclient versions? - What are the main RSC remakes available currently, and what are the differences between them? - Has anyone attempted to write an OpenGL client? - Has anyone attempted to port RSC to JavaScript? - Are all the community servers written from scratch or was there a leak of Jagex server code? - What is Jagex's stance on RSC emulation? I read on the About page that "due to legal issues with JaGex, RSCDaemon was forced to close down". - What are some of the major milestones in the history of RSC emulation? - Is there a repository of NPC / quest dialog somewhere, or do server developers just make their best guess?
